I can’t believe I missed this… Narragansett Beer has released their beer in the vintage 1975 can design. Why is this important? Because 1975 is the year Jaws came out, and Narragansett is the beer that features prominently in the scene where Quint (Robert Shaw) tries to intimidate Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) by crushing a beer can. I’d probably be more excited if I lived in New England and could actually obtain some of this beer, but what the hell. What’s more, they’re actually doing something nice for sharks. About time.
In partnership with the R.J. Dunlap Marine Conservation Program at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Narragansett Beer will sponsor the adoption of a shark through the purchase of a satellite tag, allowing researchers — and ‘Gansett fans — to track the giant fish and learn more about shark behavior. ‘Gansett fans will have the chance to name the adopted shark by submitting name suggestions through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram now through Shark Week, beginning August 10, using the hashtag #NameTheShark. Additionally, Narragansett will sponsor the purchase of a tracking buoy off the coast of Cape Cod through the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, based in Massachusetts!
Pretty sweet. Though the can doesn’t appear to have an actual pull tab, which is a failing that the retro Miller Lite cans also share. Did you know that Miller Lite actually tastes better when consumed from those cans? It’s true. Science.
