Bowing to growing pressure from thirsty and curious Americans in both parties, the White House on Saturday released the recipes for President Barack Obama’s homemade beers, revealing the executive branch’s penchant for honey-flavored brews.
The recipes for Honey Ale and Honey Porter are offered on the White House blog, along with this historical note from White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass:
As far as we know the White House Honey Brown Ale is the first alcohol brewed or distilled on the White House grounds. George Washington brewed beer and distilled whiskey at Mount Vernon and Thomas Jefferson made wine but there’s no evidence that any beer has been brewed in the White House. (Although we do know there was some drinking during prohibition…)
Check ’em out. With the exception of the honey, they look like standard-issue partial-mash recipes. That porter might not be bad, though. I may give it a shot sometime.
