Instant Beer Review: Bell’s Smitten

WELL, HI THERE. Well hello.

GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK ON A BAR STOOL. Thank you?

YOU ARE DRINKING SOMETHING. I am.

WHAT IS IT, PRAY TELL? It is none other than a Smitten from Bell’s Brewing out of Kalamazoo, MI.

STYLE? Golden rye ale. The Bell’s website has this to say:

Drawn from one of our oldest recipes, Smitten Ale began as part of a series of rye beers at our Eccentric Café. The combination of sharp citrus & resinous flavors from the hops with the earthy, rustic overtones of the rye malt contribution yield an interesting take on the American Pale Ale.

HOW IS IT? WE’RE ALL DYING TO KNOW. I doubt that very much, but I’ll tell you anyhow: it’s…okay.

YOU DON’T LIKE IT. No, it’s not that I don’t like it–Bell’s rarely lays an egg with any of their beers–it’s just that it’s nothing all that remarkable.

IT’S BORING. No, it succeeds in being what it is: a lightly hopped APA. The beer drinks clean and has a finish that doesn’t stick in your throat, while the hop profile is mild and spread evenly across the palate. It’s really quite refreshing; I’ve been drinking a lot of big beers lately, and Smitten is giving my taste buds a bit of a rest from the onslaught I’ve been submitting them to in recent days.

SO YOU’VE BEEN ON A BENDER, IS WHAT YOU’RE SAYING. This relentless winter has a firm strangle hold on my brain. I haven’t been coping very responsibly.

WHERE CAN I OBTAIN ONE OF THESE BEVERAGES? The Heritage Tavern is where I am consuming mine.

PRICE TAG? $6.00 for 12-ish oz.

WILL IT GET YOU DRUNK? Yep, but it’ll take a few. ABV is 6%.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS BEER, T/F? True. It is approachable and easy to drink, without being skunky or boring. Another feather in the cap for Bell’s. This beer will certainly not get me nearly as faded as the HopSlam (Also by Bell’s. Maduro still has some on tap. Shhh.) I was taking part in last night.

I BET THAT RESULTED IN DRUNKENNESS. Clearly.
