THE BEER: Bourbon Barrel Stout from Central Waters
THE PLACE: The Old Fashioned Tavern & Restaurant. This beer is currently #27 on their list of 52.
THAT’S A LOT OF TAPS. Boy howdy.
ARE THERE SCREAMING CHILDREN NEARBY? Why yes! There are! It’s been a full day of listening to little Tanner, Oliver, Madison, and Lucius scream their little heads off while their progenitors offer constructive advice like, “We don’t sit that way, do we McKinley?”
SOUNDS HORRIBLE. WAIT, WHAT’S THAT OTHER BEER IN THE PICTURE? It’s an Old Milwaukee. I need it to cut the stout.
STRONG, THEN? Lord yes. This stout has been aged for a year in 12-year bourbon barrels. Beer Advocate puts it at 9.5% ABV. This is not a brew to be trifled with.
HOW IS IT? Intense. Vanilla nose, sweet boozy taste. Hints of chocolate. Not cocoa. Did you know there are people out there who hate the word cocoa? It’s true. Go figure. Anyway, lots of bourbon flavor. It’s actually a bit much for me, but my bourbon-loving chums are big fans.
AND THE OLD MIL? Tastes like water compared to the stout. It’s nothing.
DEEP THOUGHTS: Not bad, but a pint is just too much. This would be better served in a snifter, really. It is tasty, but I can’t imagine drinking more than one. That said, it does seem to make the screams of delighted children somewhat more tolerable.
