Instant Beer Review: Solemn Oath None More Black

THE BEER: None More Black, a “Black Farmhouse Ale” from Solemn Oath Brewery.

INTERESTING NAME. It’s a “Spinal Tap” reference.

I’M SORRY? “It’s like, how much more black could this be? and the answer is none. None more black.” Just watch the movie.

WHATEVER. SO WHAT’S A BLACK FARMHOUSE ALE? I’m guessing it’s sort of like a Saison with dark malts. “Farmhouse” usually implies spicy, fruity, funky flavors.

AND ARE THEY THERE? Yes, along with roasty, almost smoky malt flavor and a pleasant bitter finish. There’s a lot going on here.

SOUNDS COMPLICATED. Yeah, it took me a while to wrap my head around this. Of course, that could have something to do with the fact that it’s a 7.5% ABV brew.

YOU’VE HAD STRONGER. True. But I’m pretty sure the last time I had this beer it was served in a tulip glass. But here I have a pint. This should not be construed as a complaint by any means.

DEEP THOUGHTS: This is a rather interesting beer. The aroma is funky, the taste is smoky, and the finish is bitter. I dig it, but I can see it as a rather divisive brew. But hell, we live in strange times. Embrace the weird.
